Coevolutionary Investments in Human Speech and Trade

    Get PDF
We propose a novel explanation for the emergence of language in modern humans, and the lack thereof in other hominids. A coevolutionary process, where trade facilitates speech and speech facilitates trade, driven by expectations and potentially influenced by geography, gives rise to multiple stable development trajectories. While the trade-speech equilibrium is not an inevitable outcome for modern humans, we do find that it is a relatively likely result given that our species evolved in Africa under climatic conditions supporting relatively high population densities.Institutional and Behavioral Economics,

Competitive Exclusion, Diversification, and the Origins of Agriculture

    Get PDF
The beginnings of agriculture, or the agricultural revolution, is now recognized to be the widespread adoption of known practices – a change in behavior – as opposed to a phenomenon of discovery and innovation. In this paper, we combine elements of three theories—climate change, property rights, and competitive exclusion—to create a paleoeconomic model of agriculture and its diffusion. We focus on climate change as a necessary trigger, which combined with group property rights and competitive exclusion processes produced conditions sufficient for the diffusion of early agriculture. In contrast to other models in which farming emerges as technological progress or climate makes it a more productive option than hunting, farming emerges in our model even if farmers are poor hunters and cannot sustain themselves with agriculture alone. Moreover, the strategy of farming can invade the system even if farmers initially generate lower per capita consumption than hunters. The key is that the simple innovation of property rights over an immobile resource can help to insulate farmers from competitive ecological pressures.Farm Management, Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,

    Micro-optic lens for data storage

    Get PDF
A new type of microlens for data storage applications that has improved off-axis performance is described. The lens consists of a micro Fresnel pattern on a curved substrate. The radius of the substrate is equal to the focal length of the lens. If the pattern and substrate are thin, the combination satisfies the Abbe sine condition. Therefore, the lens is free of coma. We analyze a 0.5 numerical aperture, 0.50 mm focal length lens in detail. A 0.16 numerical aperture lens was fabricated holographically, and results are presented

Important role of alkali atoms in A4C60

We show that hopping via the alkali atoms plays an important role for the t1u band of A4C60 (A=K, Rb), in strong contrast to A3C60. Thus the t1u band is broadened by more than 40 % by the presence of the alkali atoms. The difference between A4C60 and A3C60 is in particular due to the less symmetric location of the alkali atoms in A4C60.Comment: 5 pages, revtex, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. The purpose of this research was to study the influence of Javanese tradition music therapy (gamelan) on positive face expression of autistic child. The research subject were three children of autism. Method of this research used observation with rating scale. The research subject was selected by purposive sampling. The data analysis used Friedman-test. The result of analysis was chi square (X2)= 6 (

    Differential spot-size focus servo

    Get PDF
We describe performance of a differential spot-size (wax-wane) focus servo. Crosstalk from the tracks are analyzed in the single detector and differential focus circuits. Magnitude of the crosstalk is reduced by a factor of three in the differential circuit. A false focus-error signal (FES) is present when the spot crosses sector marks at an angle

Systematic Mapping of the Hubbard Model to the Generalized t-J Model

The generalized t-J model conserving the number of double occupancies is constructed from the Hubbard model at and in the vicinity of half-filling at strong coupling. The construction is realized by a self-similar continuous unitary transformation. The flow equation is closed by a truncation scheme based on the spatial range of processes. We analyze the conditions under which the t-J model can be set up and we find that it can only be defined for sufficiently large interaction. There, the parameters of the effective model are determined.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures included. v2: Order of sections changed. Calculation and discussion of apparent gap in Section IV.A correcte

Entropic forces generated by grafted semiflexible polymers

    Get PDF
The entropic force exerted by the Brownian fluctuations of a grafted semiflexible polymer upon a rigid smooth wall are calculated both analytically and by Monte Carlo simulations. Such forces are thought to play an important role for several cellular phenomena, in particular, the physics of actin-polymerization-driven cell motility and movement of bacteria like Listeria. In the stiff limit, where the persistence length of the polymer is larger than its contour length, we find that the entropic force shows scaling behavior. We identify the characteristic length scales and the explicit form of the scaling functions. In certain asymptotic regimes we give simple analytical expressions which describe the full results to a very high numerical accuracy. Depending on the constraints imposed on the transverse fluctuations of the filament there are characteristic differences in the functional form of the entropic forces; in a two-dimensional geometry the entropic force exhibits a marked peak.Comment: 21 pages, 18 figures, minor misprints correcte
